Technology Survey Needs AssessmentWe conducted a needs assessment through a survey using the internet site “SurveyMonkey”.  We were given permission to ask our faculty at Houma Jr. High to complete the survey over a 4 day period.After two reminders we had a total of 45 teachers complete the survey spanning all subjects from Math and English to P.E. and Special Education.
Needs AssessmentThe following presentation is a summary of the results of the survey given.The survey contained 10 questions starting with grade and subject taught.The results were distributed among 7th, 8th and 9th grades.There were even some guidance counselors and librarians that completed the survey.
Results for Number of Years Teaching
Current Technology Use(See Appendix A)63.6% of all teachers surveyed believe that Houma Jr. High has an adequate technology base available to them.95.5% of all teachers surveyed use Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint as teaching tools.93.2% of all teachers surveyed use Email daily as part of their teaching tools.Only 2.3% of all teachers surveyed use Audio/Video Podcasts as a teaching tool.
Current Technology UseOnly 4.5% of all teachers surveyed use WebQuests as a teaching tool.Only 6.8% of all teachers surveyed use Wikis as a teaching tool.11.4% of teachers surveyed responded that they use Google tools to teach with.Of those teachers responding to the survey 65.9% rate themselves as proficient or advanced with educational technology tools.
Computer Hardware Use(See Appendix B)Teachers who were surveyed indicated they use computer hardware like teacher and student computers, projectors, and DVD/VCR players in their classrooms for teaching.Mobile labs, Wireless Slates and Student Response Systems were used rarely in classroom teaching.
Professional Development Teachers Want Teachers were asked to choose 3 categories they would most be interested in for professional development topics.  The next slide displays the results of the survey.

Results of Best time to Attend Professional DevelopmentTeachers were asked to rate their interest in attending professional development based on the following conditions using a scale of 1 being the best time and 3 being the worse time to attend.  PD is held during regular planning period meetings.PD is held after school, without pay, but you’ll be learning some really cool stuff.PD is held on a school professional development day.

What are we going to do?Based on the results of this survey and taking into account the personality of our faculty we have decided to do two types of PD.A Self Directed Study on “PD 360” for teachers needing CLU’s and help with curriculum ideas, discipline and critical thinking.A Planning Period PD opportunity for teachers to learn creative ways to integrate technology into their lessons.(For example: Vokis, moviemaker, and wikis with embedded media.)
